William “Bill” Crawford, the former Indiana State Representative, served our state for 40 years. He served in District 98, which includes the Martindale Brightwood area. MBCDC and Martin University will continue to acknowledge the late William “Bill” Crawford and pay tribute to his legacy through the golf outing named in his honor.

William “Bill” Crawford Legacy Award

Biography

William Crawford, born in Indianapolis, was a Navy veteran, civil servant, and influential
lawmaker. Inspired by the civil rights movement, he dedicated his career to community
activism, co-founding the Indiana Black Expo and advocating for education, minority rights,
and social justice. He represented the 98th District in the Indiana House from 1972 to
2012, working alongside Julia Carson. As the first Black legislator to chair the House Ways
and Means Committee, he authored state budgets that prioritized equitable funding. His
legislative efforts shaped minority scholarships, affordable housing, and protections for
people with disabilities. Crawford also played a pivotal role in establishing the Kennedy
King Memorial, expanding opportunities for Black educators, and pushing for voting rights.
His impact extended beyond Indiana, influencing national conversations on civil rights and
voter advocacy. The longest-serving African American lawmaker in U.S. history, his legacy
continues to inspire political and social change.

Senator Jean Breaux Champion Award

Biography

Jean Breaux was a dedicated public servant and advocate for the people, championing
quality-of-life policies to improve Indiana during her nearly two decades in the Legislature.
Elected to the State Senate in 2006, she served as Assistant Democratic Leader from 2012
to 2020. Throughout her career, Breaux was deeply involved in state and national
organizations, including the Indiana Recycling Market Development Board, Medicaid
Advisory Commission, and the National Conference of State Legislatures. She held
leadership roles in community-focused groups such as the Indianapolis Urban League,
NAACP, and the National Kidney Foundation. Her commitment to service extended to the
Indiana Women’s Commission, the Indiana State Fair Advisory Committee, and the
Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana. Recognized as an emerging
political leader, she participated in a leadership program at the University of Virginia.
Breaux attended Boston University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business
Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, along with professional certifications in
economic development. Her legacy is one of unwavering dedication to policy and
community advancement.
