Biography

William Crawford, born in Indianapolis, was a Navy veteran, civil servant, and influential
lawmaker. Inspired by the civil rights movement, he dedicated his career to community
activism, co-founding the Indiana Black Expo and advocating for education, minority rights,
and social justice. He represented the 98th District in the Indiana House from 1972 to
2012, working alongside Julia Carson. As the first Black legislator to chair the House Ways
and Means Committee, he authored state budgets that prioritized equitable funding. His
legislative efforts shaped minority scholarships, affordable housing, and protections for
people with disabilities. Crawford also played a pivotal role in establishing the Kennedy
King Memorial, expanding opportunities for Black educators, and pushing for voting rights.
His impact extended beyond Indiana, influencing national conversations on civil rights and
voter advocacy. The longest-serving African American lawmaker in U.S. history, his legacy
continues to inspire political and social change.
